Katie and Mark’s wedding concept was a bit different than most…the wedding became a tribute to her grandparents and her maternal grandparents were from Havana, Cuba. She wanted her wedding to have that feel of old time Havana, with the carefree cabana style from the 40′s. It was inspiring to work on the family’s rich history and bring it alive at the wedding.
Wedding date: October 13, 2012
Inspiration: All the little touches is what brought together the vision. With an authentic cigar roller, cabana tent, mojito signature drinks along with mojito lollipops that were used as place cards, it really came together. Having the florist work her magic with the palm leaves and a tropical arrangement combining antique cigar boxes that held the centerpieces gave the look a special feel. The table numbers were old-fashioned postcards from the era with photos that represented old Havana. Antique style cigar match boxes, family heirloom jewelry rounded out the many touches that made this day feel like a trip to Cuba and a wonderful way to tie in her family history. Katie wanted to have the wedding be a tribute to both sets of grandparents since they never had a formal wedding because they eloped.
Color palette: Green, orange & deep purple were the main colors with added in tropical colors incorporated in the flowers
Guest count: 100
Most unique design element: Incorporating the Cuban style into the event – the cigar roller added a lot of the authentic feel…it was unique and fun.
Biggest challenge: Katie’s grandmother to whom this wedding was inspired passed away a few months before the wedding, so it was more important than ever to get this theme right and pay homage to her family ties.
Hindsight: The wedding was a big success. Everything turned out to be just perfect. One thing you can never count on is the weather in New England and although it was clear, it was cold, and it was a tented wedding. Good news is everyone warmed up when the dancing began!
Learnings: I am always amazed at how the love of family pulls everyone together, losing her grandmother prior to the wedding was very upsetting to the bride, but keeping the focus on celebrating life is what was important. We never know what will happen prior to a wedding, but always remembering what is really important at the end of the day is my take-a-way.
The Venue: The Longfellow’s Wayside Inn is a very historic Inn. It is the oldest operating Inn in the country and holds so much history. It is truly fascinating. Here is an excerpt from their website and a link:
